The Statesville Police Department is investigating a smash-and-grab burglary in which a man drove a vehicle into the front of a business, breaking out the window so they could access merchandise.

SPD officers responded to an alarm at Michael's Gold Mine, located at 835 North Center Street, about 1:48 a.m. Saturday, according to a news release.

After arriving on the scene, officers discovered the front glass of the business had been completely broken out, Capt. Bryan Johnson said in the news release. Tire tracks were located in front of the window, he added.

A security video obtained by officers showed a suspect drive a dark passenger car, possibly an early-2000s model Buick, through the front glass, Johnson said. The suspect then got out, ran in and grabbed jewelry from the display cases, according to the news release. He was in the store less than a minute.

The business owner estimated the value of the items stolen at approximately $20,000.

The suspect was described as a white male. He was wearing a black/red jacket and light hat.

The SPD is also investigating the following crime reports:

• Discharging firearm in city, May 12: Caller reported that two males rode through the 5th/Raleigh area in a white Ford Expedition with the grill missing, and one was firing a gun into the air. No injuries or property damage reported.

Breaking & Entering/Larceny from a residence, 400 block of East Sharpe Street, May 13: Suspect(s) pried open back screen door to enter and ransacked house. A 50-inch Vizio TV, iPad, iPad Mini, and bottle of loose change were reported stolen. Neighbor saw three juveniles run from victim’s yard.
