SPD searching for suspect in shooting outside of convenience store

Statesville police officers are searching for a suspect in a shooting that occurred early Saturday afternoon outside of the Good Deal Food Mart on Newton Drive.

SPD officers were dispatched to the convenience store just after 1 p.m., Capt. Bryan Johnson said in a news release.

Upon arrival, officers found a 37-year-old male victim in the parking lot suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg, Johnson said.

Iredell County EMS responded to the scene and transported the victim, whose name was not released, to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for further treatment.

SPD Criminal Investigations detectives responded to the scene to follow up on the shooting. During the investigation, a suspect was developed, according to the news release.

As a result of the investigation, warrants were obtained for the suspect, identified as Tyrell Dontaye Daniels, 27, of Statesville.

Daniels is being charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and discharging firearm in city limits.

Police officers are still searching for the suspect, Johnson said. This investigation is still ongoing.
