SPD: Man charged with breaking into home damaged by fire

A Statesville man is charged with breaking into a home damaged by fire and stealing property.
After receiving a call in response to a third break-in at the home in the 400 block of Fayetteville Avenue, Statesville police officers found the suspect still inside the home just before noon on Tuesday, according to an SPD news release.
William Shalimar Watkins, 61, was inside the home when the resident arrived and was rummaging through the house, Capt. Bryan Johnson said in the news release.
Watkins was arrested and charged with felony breaking and entering and larceny. He was given a $20,000 secured bond and was held at the Iredell County Jail.
During a break-in reported earlier, a 65-inch LG Smart TV, a 55-inch smart TV, and a pair of 4-foot tall speakers were reported stolen.
Investigators are trying to determine if Watkins is connected to other break-ins in the area, according to the news release.
The SPD is also investigating the following crime reports:
• Shots fired in the area, 700 block of North Oakland Avenue, May 17: Caller heard four or five gun shots in the area. Officers located shell casings in the roadway at the intersection of Oakland Avenue and Mitchell Avenue.
• Breaking & Entering/Larceny from a Vehicle, 255 North Center Street, Hardee’s, May 16: Victim left wallet in vehicle unlocked in the parking lot. Wallet with cards/papers stolen.
• Breaking & Entering/Larceny from a Residence, 500 block of Fayetteville Avenue, May 13 or 14: Suspect entered victim’s enclosed porch and stole a leaf blower and drop cord.
