The Statesville Police Department is searching for a suspect who shot two people in a home off Newbern Avenue early Sunday morning.

Officers responded to a shots-fired call in the 300 block of Newbern Avenue about 1:26 a.m. Sunday, according to an SPD news release.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found two victims, one of whom had been shot in the chest, Capt. Bryan Johnson said in the news release. A second victim was hit in the ankle, by a possible ricochet, Johnson said.

The victim who was hit in the chest was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, where the individual was listed in critical condition, Johnson said.

The shooter, who was described as a 6-foot-tall black male wearing a black mask, camo jacket and dark pants and shoes, reportedly fired through the front door, according to the news release.

Officers recovered shell casings at the scene.
