SPD: Convenience store employees robbed at gunpoint

Statesville police are investigating after employees of a local convenience store were robbed at gunpoint on Wednesday evening.

A suspect entered the Exxon store at 1060 Salisbury Road about 6:36 p.m. on Wednesday and pointed a handgun at the clerks, SPD Capt. Bryan Johnson said in a news release.

The suspect was described a young black male wearing a blue and yellow hoodie and jeans. The bottom half of the suspect's face was covered, according to the news release.

After brandishing the weapon, the suspect came around the the counter and stole cash from the register and a safe before fleeing, Johnson said. The handgun was described as black with a chrome chamber with "1911" look to it.

No injuries were reported.

Multiple officers responded to the scene within two minutes of being dispatched. They searched the area, but did not locate the suspect.
