Sheriff Darren Campbell announces plans to seek re-election in 2018
FROM STAFF REPORTS
Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell announced Friday afternoon that he would run for re-election in 2018.
Campbell, a Republican who defeated Democrat Rick Ervin in 2014, has already raised more than $29,000 for his campaign, according to his most recent filing with the Iredell County Board of Elections Office. Campbell raised nearly $56,000 in the last election cycle.
The official filing period for the 2018 elections is Feb. 12-28. If a primary election is necessary, it will be held on Tuesday, May 8.
Here is Campbell's campaign announcement, which was first published on Facebook:
I am continually amazed at how quickly time passes. It does not seem possible that three short years ago, my family stood beside me on the steps of the Old Courthouse, as I had the honor to take the oath to become your Sheriff.
In the time that I have been your Sheriff, I have had the privilege to meet and work with a great deal of citizens from across this county. I have also had the privilege to work along side an outstanding group of fellow law enforcement officers, which I feel, are second to none. I am proud of these deputies and the tremendous jobs they perform on a daily basis.
We have accomplished much, in a short amount of time. We have recently broke ground on a new detention center that will eliminate expensive cost of housing Iredell County inmates outside this county. We have developed and implemented programs that reach out to our community, from our teens to our older population, including a program focusing solely on Church Safety. We continue to focus on our schools and the safety of our students and faculty. We have restructured many positions in the Sheriff's Office, and as a result, saved taxpayers money while increasing services.
However, there is much left to do. We need to continue to build the services provided to the citizens of Iredell County. We must remain diligent in providing outstanding service to our citizens, and continue to make this county a safer place for us all. So, it is with great pride that I seek to remain your Sheriff, and announce my bid for re-election.
As the 2018 election campaign begins, I humbly ask for your support, and prayers.
