Leaders with Mitchell Community College and University of Mount Olive (UMO) formally signed an articulation agreement for agricultural studies. The agreement is a 2+2 program between Mitchell’s AAS in Agribusiness Technology and UMO’s BS in Agricultural Education.

Along with the college’s existing Agribusiness articulation agreement with the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NC A&T), this new agreement opens doors for students to continue their studies and earn additional credentials.

“We are very excited about this opportunity,” said Camille Reese, vice president for instruction at Mitchell. “UMO has an excellent Ag program and a long history of agricultural education. Our students will more easily be able to continue on for advanced degrees. We hope this will be the first collaboration of many!”

Mitchell’s Agribusiness Technology, started in fall 2014, instructs students in the basics of soil and animal science along with agricultural marketing, law and finance. Certificate and degree options are available.

“We’re not just teaching how to farm, but how to make a living in agriculture; how to develop new agriculture business,” Dr. Tim Brewer, Mitchell’s president, explained.

The program boasts an Urban Farm next to the College’s Continuing Education Center on West Front Street in Statesville. This active learning classroom allows students to experiment with growing methods and to observe labor, time and material requirements.
