FROM STAFF REPORTS

The Statesville Human Relations Commission (SHRC) is sponsoring a special gathering next week to help community members engage with the Statesville Police Department.

The event, billed as "A Conversation with the Police Chief," is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 7, at the Bentley Community Center, which is located at 324 Wilmington Avenue, Statesville.

"Because of numerous recent events, tensions have heightened in the southside section of our community," the SHRC explained on its Facebook page. "The Human Relations Commission exists to assist with understanding and dialogue between citizens and law enforcement."

Community members are encouraged to present their concerns during the gathering. SPD Chief Joe Barone will respond to questions and comments raised during the gathering.

"This is important!!!" the SHRC said in the post. "We need to be about the work of healing our community."

About the Statesville Human Relations Commission

The Statesville Human Relations Commission was organized in 2016 to promote amicable relations and mutual respect among all groups in the greater Statesville area and to discourage discriminatory practices toward such groups, thus promoting the general welfare of this community.
