Countdown on to Carolina Roots MusicFest May 19-20

Carolina Roots MusicFest has a full line-up slated for its second annual event, May 19-20, at the Statesville Regional Airport. Sixteen bands are set to perform, four of them returning from last year’s event.

“This year, we have a second stage, so we are showcasing twice as many bands as last year,” Richard Griggs, Carolina Roots MusicFest committee member, said.

The second stage will allow a band to set up while another band performs, so there will be no lag time in between bands.

Griggs said the festival will attract a good mix of musical genres from the region and several other states.

“Many of these bands fall into the Americana genre, which in itself is everything that falls into the cracks that you wouldn’t necessarily classify as country,” Griggs said. “We also have some bluegrass, rock and reggae. We did effort to have some variety in the different types of music offered.”

While some bands are from Statesville and surrounding communities, others will travel from Tennessee, Illinois and Michigan.

“We made an effort to reach out and bring in bands that people mentioned they wanted to see,” Griggs said. “We’ve had a lot of requests and recommendations. We are only in our second year of this event and some of the recommendations were out of our scope, so hopefully we can keep growing and get some of those even bigger names.”

Griggs said he got great feedback from bands who performed last year, with several deciding to return.

"We want to use this as an opportunity to showcase the talent and variety of our regional musicians," he said. "We have lots of great musicians in the area and we want to give them opportunities here like this.”

Attendees rave about the music on the Carolina Roots MusicFest Facebook page. Charlotte Ann Ralston rated the event five stars.

“Such a great time,” Ralston wrote. “The food and drinks were wonderful. The people who attended were such a happy crowd with infectious smiles. And best of all, the music was phenomenal! Looking forward to attending this year’s festival!”
