The GFWC-NC Statesville Woman's Club welcomed N.B. Mills Elementary School Principal Sheliah Burnette as the guest speaker at its October meeting.
During the meeting, Burnette shared her own personal journey, of how education has helped shape her life, the importance of education no matter what your personal background is and of her becoming a first time principal.
She shared statistics that helped club members understand the challenges currently faced by students and staff at N.B. Mills. She stressed the high expectations that teachers and administration hold for students. Their belief is that despite the challenges discussed, most students will graduate from high school and attend community college or four-year universities. She added her hope that some will return to N.B. Mills with teaching credentials in hand.
An honorarium was also given in her name to N.B. Mills School cafeteria to aid students in purchasing meals.
President Sandra Ball Poole reminded the members of the of the GFWC-NC District II Fall Meeting that will be held in Lenoir on Saturday, October 21.
