Bicycle Share Program begins Oct. 28 at Bentley Community Center
BY HALEY JONES
The Statesville Recreation and Parks Department will launch the Bentley Bicycle Share, a free community program in which individuals can check out a bicycle for daily use, on Oct. 28. This day will also mark the annual Bentley Fall Festival event.
“The Statesville Recreation & Parks Department received a generous donation of 24 youth bicycles from a partnership with Greater Statesville Chamber of Commerce, The Davis Regional Amazing Race, and Walmart,” said Richard Griggs, Statesville Recreation and Parks Program Director.
Fifteen bicycles assembled by Amazing Race participants will become a part of the Ralph L. Bentley Community Center fleet. The other 10 will be given away at the fall festival. Attendees can register to win at the event.
To rent a bicycle from the Bicycle Share Program, youths must have a bicycle-use waiver on file at the Bentley Community Center, signed by a parent or legal guardian. Currently, the program is aimed at youths in the community, but if there is enough demand, the program could potentially grow to include adult bicycles.
Bicycles will be available for checkout during regular Bentley Community Center hours, but they must be returned each day by a specified time depending on the season and sunset.
“This program is designed to provide additional recreational opportunities and improved quality of life for the children in the community surrounding the Bentley Center,” said Griggs. “The benefits for those who check out bikes are numerous.”
All bicycles in the Bentley Bicycle Share fleet will be numbered and registered with the Statesville Police Department.
Waivers will be available for parents to sign at the fall festival so that their children can begin utilizing the program.
The Bentley Community Center Fall Festival, held at 324 Wilmington Ave., Statesville, is a free event for all ages and will consist of inflatables, food, candy, and games.
