An invitation-only crowd got a first glimpse at the revamped McDonald’s on U.S. Highway 90 on Wednesday night. The new 5,300-square-foot restaurant sports state-of-the-art equipment and offers a modern dining area with lounge-type seating and Wi-Fi. For customers on the go, there’s also a two-lane drive-thru.
Owners Mike and Melissa Neader welcomed the crowd, offering an official tour and trivia contest. Guests also enjoyed live music and an array of refreshments.
The location holds a special place for second-generation McDonald’s owner Mike Neader, whose father opened the first McDonald’s in Statesville in 1975.
“It’s sentimental,” said Mike about the location, where he held first management position at the age of 20 after working his way up from cook.
He purchased four of the businesses from his father. The Neaders now own eight McDonald’s locations, spread throughout Statesville, Troutman, Mooresville and Cornelius.
At Wednesday’s event, the Neaders also recognized three members of the community. The first was longtime customer Vic McIntyre, a WWII veteran in his 90s who has frequented the Signal Hill McDonald’s for years.
Mike has gotten to know McIntyre, and enjoyed hearing stories about his war experiences. The veteran has also been involved with the Red Cross for almost two decades, and continues to volunteer on mission trips.
For McIntyre’s service to our country and his continued hard work and dedication in the community, the Neaders recognized honored him as a loyal McDonald’s customer with a plaque and a gift card.
Statesville Police Chief Barone and Sheriff Daren Campbell were also recognized as important members of the community and received a surprise gift. Melissa asked the pair to open the gift bags at the same time, revealing T-shirts sporting the image of the Hamburgler.
The new McDonald’s will open on April 24. On May 6, the restaurant will host a Spirit Night featuring Ronald McDonald and a radio broadcast by Billy Buck. There will also be food promotions and a bike giveaway.
“We’re glad to finally open this location back up,” said Melissa Neader. “There are a lot of people in the area that depend on this location for breakfast, lunch and dinner, so we finally have the West end location up and ready to go.”
The restaurant, located at 3201 Taylorsville Highway, has more than 120 employees and a 13-person management team.
