The N.C. Department of Labor recently presented awards to local businesses in Statesville, honoring their commitment to safety in the workplace.

Presenting the awards was N.C. Labor Commissioner Cherie Berry, who has held the positon since 2000. Berry won re-election to additional four-year terms in 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016.

Berry’s goal is to make North Carolina the safest state in the country for workers.

“It is such an honor and privilege to be with all of you today because all of you have earned the right to be here,” Berry said in her keynote address. “I am grateful for (your safe and healthy work environments) because you have helped North Carolina in ways you can’t even imagine. You have helped your country economically. You have helped your community by keeping everybody safe. You have helped families stay together.”

Berry spoke about the injury and illness rate, stating that when she first started, the injury and illness rate was 5.3 per 100 full-time workers. Seventeen years later, the rate has dropped to 2.6 per 100 full-time workers.

“That’s the lowest it has ever been in the history of North Carolina and I have you to thank for that,” Berry said. “(The rate) is well below the national average, but we can’t stop. We want (that number) lower. You’re doing a terrific job, but you can’t stop because safety never stops”.

Two types of awards were presented: a Silver Award was presented to businesses with the employee rate of days away from work being at least 50% below the industry average. Gold Awards were presented to businesses with the employee rate of days away from work, job transfer or restriction being at least 50% below industry average.

“We’ve had the pleasure of working with the Department of Labor for the last (several) years," Bradley said. "It’s neat to have folks out of Raleigh come into regions like ours to honor those who understand the value of safety. You don’t see your employees necessarily as a means by which their only job is to increase profit; you also see employees as husbands and wives, fathers and mothers. The way to build the corporate bottom line is to work toward one common goal and having a safe environment is perhaps the most important piece to that whole project.”

Assisting Berry in the award presentation was Safety Awards Coordinator Eursula Joyner.
